by Reuven Arazi
Sunday, March 30th, will mark the beginning of a new era in the storied history of Chabad of South Broward. The day will mark the groundbreaking of an overwhelming expansion project taking place at Chabad of South Broward Headquarters, located at 1295 East Hallandale Beach Boulevard. It will also be a day of celebration, as the 27th Annual Dinner of Chabad of South Broward will immediately follow the groundbreaking.
Chabad of South Broward, the first Chabad Center in Broward County, began in December 1980. Today, it oversees 12 Centers and forty agencies in ten Broward cities. The groundbreaking will launch the creation of Mikvas Menachem, three Mikvas accessible to the physically challenged,an expanded state-of-the-art preschool,an expanded Hebrew School, an expanded Summer and Winter Camp,a stunning Jerusalem design to the larger western building, and a state-of-the-art new playground.
Rabbi Raphael Tennenhaus, Chabad's executive-vice- president since its inception, explains that the shift in demographics, when Hallandale was a haven for seniors in the 1980's and 1990's, to the new century, where hundreds of new young families are moving in,is bringing about this expansion."When I first came here, I created programs that were needed, but nobody asked me to create them. Today, the demand for new programs and facilities are coming from the grass roots community, and we have no choice but to expand our facility and programming,'' the Rabbi remarked.
Receiving the Man "Mentsch" of the Year Award will be Broward County Sheriff Al Lamberti. The Sheriff has shown alot of kindness and compassion, and is helping Chabad expand Project PRIDE, Chabad's 19 year old non-sectarian drug prevention and education program.
