Farbrengen In Honor of 12 Tammuz, for Men, Women, and Children, Wednesday night, July 13 @ 8:30 PM
Men, women and children are invited to a Farbrengen ( Chassidic gathering) to celebrate the liberation of the previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yoseph Yitzchok Schneersohn, from exile in the town of Kostrama, after his release from the Spalerno prison in Petersburg Russia, in 1927. The Rebbe was imprisoned by the Communist regime for his selfless self sacrifice in creating an underground network of Yeshivas, Talmud Torahs, Mikvahs etc., despite the threats of the Soviet government and their various brutal police forces and secret service agents who often killed Chassidim who were brave, under the Rebbe's leadership and guidance, to maintain Torah and Yiddishkeit during the harsh years of Communism.
Rabbi Schneersohn was arrested on the 15th of Sivan, 1927. After being sentenced to death, he was miraculously released from Spalerno Prison on the third of Tammuz, initially to be sentenced to a 10 year period of exile. Once again, through Divine intervention, and behind the scenes efforts by international governments, including the USA, the exile period was commuted to only 10 days, and he was released from exile on 12-13 Tammuz.
He was later forced to leave Russia to Latvia, but his success was so phenomenal, the underground network of his followers continued for the next 60 plus years to maintain and spread the embers of Torah and Yiddishkeit, until the fall of Communism in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Today, Judaism thrives in the former USSR, with hundreds of Chabad Houses, Yeshivas, Jewish Day Schools, Mikvahs, Kosher Restaurants etc etc, all as a result of the seeds planted by the previous Rebbe's pioneering self sacrifice efforts, and the efforts of his successor and son-in-law, Rabbi Menachem M Schneerson.
